You’ve never been in a car accident. At the same time, you know they happen every hour in Michigan. There are thousands of fatal crashes each year, and that doesn’t even take into account all of the injuries and property damage. As such, you may start wondering if you’re the abnormality. How many crashes do people usually get into over their lives? If a crash hasn’t happened to you yet, are you statistically just getting closer and closer to the day when it inevitably will?
Now, there are exceptions to every rule, but the general consensus is that everyone will crash a few times, perhaps between three and four. If you’re in your 30s or 40s and you have never crashed, you should both count yourself lucky and realize that, for the trend to hold, you are probably going to be involved in an accident sooner rather than later. Experts do note that where you live can make a difference, along with things like how often you drive, if you work from home, when you drive and -- naturally -- your own behavior behind the wheel.
Just because everyone will probably be involved in a few accidents does not mean you will cause all or even any of those crashes. If someone else rear-ends your car while you are sitting perfectly still at a red light, you clearly haven’t done anything wrong, but you’ve still been involved in a crash. This is why the average matters, as it also shows how often drivers around you will crash. If you get injured when they do, you may need to seek compensation.
